February is Reggae Month! What better way to escape the cold than to spend February in Jamaica? In 2008, the Jamaican government declared February as the month to celebrate and recognize reggae music’s contribution to music and the world. February is perfect considering that both Bob Marley (February 6), and the Crown Prince of Reggae, Dennis Brown (February 1) have birthdays this month. Also, Bob Marley Day Festivals are taking place worldwide. The official dates are February 1, 2019 – March 5, 2019, with events scheduled throughout the month:
- Reggae Celebrates Bob, at the Bob Marley Museum on February 6
- Reggae Films in the Park, on Fridays at Emancipation Park, New Kingston,
- Ribbiz Reggae on the Waterfront at Victoria Pier on February 10
- Amateur Night On The Mount on February 12
- Global Reggae Conference at the Ruins on February 13-16
- Rita Marley Foundation’s Annual Public Speaking Competition on February 15
- Rockabessa Herb and Music Festival in St. Ann on February 24, 2019
- Reggae Month Exhibition, which opens on February 25, 2019
The Reggae Gold Awards on February 27 will honor 50 Jamaicans who have contributed significantly to the development of the music. For the complete calendar of activities and events: Reggae Month Calendar
